Getting a project off on the right foot is vital. This means setting clear objectives and responsibilities, having achievable targets and supporting these with realistic plans.

Detailed budgets will be needed early on, if not at the very start and many organisations will require a business case, if the project is to go ahead.

Scoping and planning the project as a whole can be difficult, particularly if you are juggling this with day-to-day management responsibilities. Unfortunately, this can lead to 'creeping projects' which never really get finished, perhaps because they didn't get off to a good start.

We have helped many organisations get projects started, beginning with a blank sheet of paper. We do this using a combination of:

Analysis, to clarify what is needed, why and with what priority

Structured planning, which quickly scopes the work and facilitates estimating and budgeting

Practical experience of what is achievable

As a result, these projects have moved quickly through initial approval and funding and on to the next stage of work.
